In 1932, during the height of the Great Depression, four graduate students of the Michigan Socialist Club, organized and opened the first student housing co-op on the campus of U of M.  It was called the Michigan Socialist House. By 1937, there were four existing student co-ops and in the spring of that year, they joined together to form the Campus Cooperative Council. By 1939, the student co-ops were known as the Inter-Cooperative Council, ICC for short.

With the entrance of the U.S. into World War II, a rental housing explosion occurred in Ann Arbor. Developers and speculators bought up many of the big houses that were suitable for co-ops.  More than half of the student co-ops were forced from their rented houses. And relocation was next to impossible. With the hand writing on the wall, and the long held dream of owning their own cooperative houses threatened, the members of the ICC, voted in 1943 to purchase the first house. It was called A.K. Stevens. In 1944, the ICC was formally incorporated as a non-profit organization and established its’ first Board of Directors.

Today, in addition to the Central Office and the Education Center, the ICC consists of 16 houses located on both the central and north campuses of U of M. It serves over 500 members, who with the assistance of a small staff, own and operate their houses and the cooperative as a whole.

On the weekend of October 18-20, 2019, we are remembering and celebrating the 1944 Incorporation of the ICC—that pivotal moment in our history which allowed the ICC to purchase it’s first house and continue over time to provide affordable housing for thousands of student/members.

Below you will find the weekend schedule, maps for all the event locations and a short list of local accomodations. The cost for the entire weekend and all its events is $60 per person. You may pay using the ICC Paypal button located on the reservation form or you may pay by check. Please make your check out to the ICC. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Susan Caya, the Alumni Relations Coordinator at

We hope that you will come and join us in celebrating the ICC and its great legacy of providing affordable housing for its’ members as well as continuing to abide by its’ foundational co-op principles and practices, serving its’ members with ongoing education, social equality, viable community life, shared work and life-long friendships.
