Housing Inspections

Inspection Type Frequency Announced Codes Enforced Conducted By
A2 Housing Inspection Every 2 1/2 Years Yes A2 City Housing Code City Inspector
EHS Kitchen Inspection
(Boarding Kitchens)
Every Year No UofM EHS Codes EHS Inspector

Inspection Process

During housing inspections every room in the house is inspected. (During kitchen inspections only the kitchen and nearest bathroom are inspected.) If anything is found not to meet code the house will be given a period of time in which to make any necessary corrections. The inspector will then come back to see if all the corrections have been made. If the items have not been repaired the ICC will then hire outside contractors to perform the work at the house's expense. If a house fails too many inspections the city can shut down a house (or the use of its kitchen) until they deem it is up to code.

Kitchen Inspections

Kitchen inspections are conducted by UofM's Department of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) and happen once a year. They are unannounced in order for the inspector to see houses in their regular sanitation practices.
