Black Lives Matter

Dear ICC Community,

As a cooperative, we strive to fulfill our ideals of equity, education, and community. We know that equity is only the beginning and that we must seek justice for marginalized communities. It is imperative that the ICC takes actions to support the black community within, and outside of the ICC. We must have conversations surrounding police brutality, white supremacy and institutionalized racism, and we must continue to act on our cooperative principles. The ICC stands in solidarity with black communities and the protestors in Ypsi, Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo, Detroit, Lansing, Grand Rapids, and around the world who are and have been fighting for fundamental human rights.

The foundation of this country is built upon anti-blackness and white supremacy. Regardless of our intentions, harm can still be, and has been perpetuated. We acknowledge our need for reflection and continuing education. The ICC is committed to continuing to grow and change as an organization — we understand that re-education is an active practice that is never ending.

Moving forward, we will have a group Zoom conversation with members and staff to discuss recent events and make a plan to further support the Black Lives Matter movement. In addition, we will continue to work on a recently passed proposal that recognizes Lester House decision to retheme as QTPOC house in order to create a safe space for queer and transgender people of color in the ICC. This theme will be implemented in the Fall of 2021. We have also compiled a list of local resources for our black community members affected by these events, and we are looking at further steps we can take to support our members. We are working to improve our avenues for people to voice their feedback and receive support.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to the ICC General Manager at gm@icc.coop or members of CoCo at coco@icc.coop with any ideas, questions, or comments you may have. Here are some additional resources and mental health resources we compiled and encourage you to share throughout your houses and to your family and friends.
