ICC Statement on Palestine

ICC Statement on Palestine

The Inter-Cooperative Council at the University of Michigan recognizes and condemns the ongoing genocide being committed by the State of Israel against the Palestinian people of Gaza. More than 37,000 people have been killed in Gaza since October 7th, including more than 15,000 children, and thousands more that remain lost under the rubble of their homes. At the time of the writing of this statement, there are daily instances of human rights violations perpetrated by the Israeli government in their systematic targeting of Palestinian civilians.

The ICC is an anti-capitalist student housing cooperative and a proud member of the TAHRIR Coalition, made up of over eighty student organizations at the University of Michigan. We stand with students here in Ann Arbor and across the world protesting for their universities and institutions to divest from war profiteering and Israeli companies. We are proud of the large number of ICC members involved in pro-Palestine organizing throughout the past year, including at the month-long encampment on the Diag which was brutally raided by university police on May 21, 2024.

We condemn the egregious police brutality and suppression of free speech experienced by students across the country and here in Ann Arbor. Throughout the past academic year, students and community members, including members of the ICC, have been beaten, pepper sprayed, unjustly arrested, had their belongings seized, and have faced incessant surveillance while expressing their right to protest. The ICC condemns the University of Michigan’s criminalization of student protest and demands that the Washtenaw County prosecutor’s office drop all charges against protestors.

We, the ICC, are home to diverse communities and we strive to eliminate all forms of islamophobia, antisemitism, and racism within our houses. We adopt the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism, and in line with this, we reject the dangerous conflation of anti-zionism with antisemitism. The genuine and urgent fight against antisemitism and for collective liberation cannot come at the expense of other peoples’ liberation. We encourage all members, alumni, and allies of the ICC to actively fight against the ongoing genocide. The ICC continues to commit itself towards its goal of collective liberation and is proud to house and support its members fighting for justice.

Signed,
